Earth Day
Master Gardeners Ericka Jones and Ms. Rita led our students in planting in our garden on Earth Day. Several activities including yoga poses and trash pick up and replanting our front gardens and weeding. All students prek- 5 participated.

Garden upkeep September 2021
Erica Jones and her organization have gifted CRES $200 worth of garden materials to support the Fall 2021 and Spring2022 efforts. She has brought several people by to see our garden and is so impressed by our Community. We have a great advocate in her!

Cradlerock gets funding for a garden
David Plummer (District Manager for the Howard Soil Conservation District) and Amy Reese (Elementary Science Coordinator) and representatives from the University of Maryland Master Gardner Program have been working on a project to establish vegetable gardens at Howard County Elementary Schools and Cradlerock Elementary was selected.

March 27 8:30-9:30 am our school will turn off the lights. Students and staff were encouraged to do it at home tomorrow 3/28 8:30-9:30PM with the world wide initiative.

Earth Day we all pledge to take care of our earth, and we create our Earth tree- 2017
Each student in the school created a leaf and wrote on it how he/she would take care of our earth. Students put together the tree that we keep in our front foyer.

Wrap N Mat sales
Students and teachers sold wrap n mats, which are reusable mats that hold your sandwich.
Staff goes Green at Staff breakfast
Staff was encouraged to bring their own plates, cups, utensils to our monthly staff breakfast. Some were provided for staff use. We used to use styrofoam and paper. We are planning on continuing this new style.

New energy efficient lights were installed throughout the building in February 2016. Our school and county are aware of being energy efficient.

GREENEWIT ASSEMBLY- NOVEMBER 2015
Gabe Bustos shared a wonderful presentation on energy efficiency, renewable energy, environmental and water conservation with Cradlerock Elementary School in November 2015. He gave tips to be green everywhere and challenged everyone to become more environmentally friendly at school and at home. Our students (440 students) eagerly attend to the lessons.
Eric Energy visits and Teaches preK-5 about energy
On April 7, 2015 our wonderful PTA sponsored Eric Energy to come to our school to teach us about energy through his Go Green program. We had two shows that reached a total of 440 students, lasted for 60 minutes each, and involved a wacky scientist which performed science experiments. Many students were able to volunteer and participate. The show focused on electricity, polymers, and air. The students loved seeing the indoor lightning, vortex fog rings, and slime!

We started a recycling program at Cradlerock.
Signs and boxes are posted for recycle items. Students created the collection boxes. We recycle crayons, markers, juice pouches, and make sure all our paper is recycled.
Our lunch room has informational posters about what is recycle-able and what is terracycle-able and what goes to the landfill.
Reducing the amount of paper we use at our school
Our Staff handbook and important papers are stored on the web in our School Canvas page instead of using paper. We use Google docs to share important information that also helps us go paperless.
Our PTA and School have websites to share information electronically with our community so we don't have to send papers. Our school bulletin and agendas for meetings are done electronically as well.
Teachers can assign homework and receive it back electronically through our Canvas portal.

CRES STEM night December 2, 2015
In December we, along with Columbia Association, Greenewit and CRES, held a STEM night. Parents, students, and staff worked together to think about science, technology, engineering, and math to learn how to keep our houses insulated and energy efficient. They created electricity using coins and wires and a bulb. Parents heard from Greenewit about why and how to have their homes energy efficient. We had a total of 47 students and 35 parents attend this event.
