Virtual lesson using recycled materials
Jan 2021---As part of our Social Emotional Learning curriculum, we talked about listening by focusing our attention on the person who is talking. The students pretended that their hands were binoculars and pretended to look at me through their "pretend binoculars". Then, the students had a chance to make their own Attentoscopes using recycled toilet paper rolls from their own houses. Here are a few pictures of some of the Pre-K students Attentoscopes.
National recycle day Nov. 2020
On Monday, Nov. 16,2020 the Pre-K students learned about National Recycle Day. We showed them the PowerPoint that Ms. Salvia created and then, they watched a video on You Tube about recycling. After that, each student shared a way that he or she could be "green" at home. Here are pictures of the Google Slides that I made for the lesson and pictures of the students' ideas of how they could be "green" at home.
PreK learn to use recycled materials to create art.
PreK made these things out of recycled materials. Jan 2020 Unit 2 of our Pre-K curriculum, Connect4Learning, we learn about our environment. In this particular small group lesson, ‘Don’t Throw It Away!’, the children had the opportunity to show their creativity as they engaged in flexible thinking to create new objects from old items.

Read across America day- the lorax- march 2, 2016
On Read Across America Day, our theme was The Lorax. We learned that it is important for all of us to take care of our environment. The Lorax (Our principal, Jason McCoy) visited every class. Our community partners, The Park Rangers, came in and read to all our students. We read, wrote, and discovered ways we could help the world. Students learned that we need our trees for oxygen, shade and habitats for animals. Students were given up-cycled crayons made from our old crayons.
Pre-K AT THE MOBILE PLANETARIUM
Instead of students taking buses to the Planetarium, we brought the Mobile Planetarium to us on December 17, 2015. We want our students to know how important our planet is and how important it is to take care of our planet. Our planet is just one piece of our solar system and we encourage students to think of our global environment as precious now and in our future. We are challenging ourselves to rediscover the Earth’s beauty and the importance of the global environment.
Sizzling Candy canes
We watched how candy canes reacted with baking soda and vinegar, making predictions about what would happen. We put baking soda on a cookie sheet and then we added some candy canes. Students took turns pouring green vinegar on the cookie sheet, and we all watched the bubbling reaction. Eventually the candy canes dissolved. We learned from this experiment that we need to take care of our water supply and be more environmentally friendly.
2015-16 STEM in our PreK room. We learned about our environment and built our factories. We learned that factories can add pollutants to the air, so we need to learn to make our factories more environmental friendly.
Farm trip
Pre-K took a trip to the farm to learn how a farm works. Children experience the natural world in a new way and make a vital connection between the social, ecological, and economic importance of agriculture in their lives and why we must keep the green spaces they occupy healthy.
Re-use materials
Pre-K made Recycled Rectangle Robots and learned how we can find good uses for recyclable materials.
