Students learning virtually used Jamboard to share about the Watershed. 11/2020
MESA group
Maryland MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) is an exciting and engaging after-school program for students in grades 3-5 at CRES to spark interest in STEM education and careers. 2-2020
5th graders build water filters
Students work to understand human impact on the hydrosphere, the importance of clean water, and are able to use the engineering design process to build a water filter that improves the quality of water.
The Environmental Report Card, or ERC, engages fifth grade students in using their school grounds as an environmental laboratory, studying and researching to answer questions about biodiversity, runoff/erosion, vegetation, and how these systems interact and impact one another. Students will use the knowledge they gain about their school grounds to propose, develop and carry-out a plan to improve an area on school grounds and thereby having a positive effect on Earth’s system(s).

Students in grade 5 participated in finding out about pollutants in our watershed and how to take care of our earth.
Billy B comes to our school
Students learn how to take care of our earth and about biodiversity from Billy B and his songs.
5th graders went to Bioblitz.
On October 4, 2016 out 5th graders visited Belmont Manor in Howard County, MD.
FIFTH AND FIRST GRADERS UP-CYCLING ACTIVITY
Fifth graders modeled to first graders how used tires can be up-cycled into materials for making roads. They Cheerios as the tire material.

Fifth graders learn about Earth Day.
Read across america day- the lorax- march 2, 2016
On Read Across America Day, our theme was The Lorax. We learned that it is important for all of us to take care of our environment. The Lorax (Our principal, Jason McCoy) visited every class. Our community partners, The Park Rangers, came in and read to all our students. We read, wrote, and discovered ways we could help the world. Students learned that we need our trees for oxygen, shade and habitats for animals. Students were given up-cycled crayons made from our old crayons.
Students learn about Pollution
Students learn about types of pollution and write about it and think of ways to reduce pollution.
Chesapeake Bay Watershed
In February and March 2016 our fifth graders (77 students) studied issues of pollution and how it affects our local watershed, the Chesapeake Bay. The students did a research unit in their Language Arts that supported the Next Generation Science Standards. They reported on Global Warming and the Gulf Oil Spill of 2010.
FIfth GRADERS AT THE MOBILE PLANETARIUM
Instead of students taking buses to the Planetarium, we brought the Mobile Planetarium to us on December 17, 2015. We want our students to know how important our planet is and how important it is to take care of our planet. Our planet is just one piece of our solar system and we encourage students to think of our global environment as precious now and in our future. We are challenging ourselves to rediscover the Earth’s beauty and the importance of the global environment.
