The effect of the environment has on their community
October 2020 Our 1st Quarter Social Studies unit is all about how communities change over time. On October 30, for the 6th lesson in our unit, students learned about how what effect the environment has on communities and vice versa. When the students worked asynchronously, they read about pollution and how we can protect our environment. Each third grader then identified a problem in our community related to the environment and proposed a solution to that problem. Students also had the option to make a rap to go along with their problem/solution. The students completed their work in their Digital Social Studies Notebooks.
Also, when I presented the Green School slides that Nicole made, my class was extremely engaged and wanted to talk all morning about how we can be more green at home. Several students mentioned that they wanted to talk about it more and even create posters to teach others.

Jan 2020--3rd graders build robots to collect trash
Students learn about trash in our waterways and ways robots can help clean up. Then they created a tool to attach to the robot to collect trash.
Monarch butterfly
Students learn the traits of the Monarch butterfly and how it affects its survival. Students learned the importance that humans support the Monarch butterfly.
How plants and animals live
Third graders learned about how different plants and animals can live together in the same habitat. Students study insects, plants, animals in their environment over a period of time.
Learning about the chesapeake bay
2019 Ms. Chris Price came to each 3rd grade classroom to teach about the Chesapeake Bay. Students did activities to learn about the importance of the Chesapeake Bay. April2019
HCPSS helps teachers make Green School connections.
Earth Day 2018
2018 Students took care of our school grounds by picking up trash outside.
Using recycled materials for Read across America Day
Third graders (and whole school) created Sneetch houses out of recycled materials. 3-2018
Learning about CHESAPEAKE watershed
November 2017- Our partners from the Howard County Watershed Stewards came and taught all third graders about taking care of our watershed. Students participated in activities to learn how pollution can hurt our water.
Students learn about communities

Our partners, Howard county watershed stewards Academy teach about taking care of our watershed
Students in grade 3 participated in finding out about pollutants in our watershed and how to take care of our earth. (April2017)

Johns Hopkins University Applied physics lab visits Third grade
An engineer from JHU APL who works on NASA projects came and presented information to our third graders in February of 2016. Students worked on STEM projects to engineer a 'tow truck' to pull a truck out of the muck using only magnets, strings, popsicle sticks, and tape. We used found and recycled items to create our trucks.
Third GRADERS AT THE MOBILE PLANETARIUM
Instead of students taking buses to the Planetarium, we brought the Mobile Planetarium to us on December 17, 2015. We want our students to know how important our planet is and how important it is to take care of our planet. Our planet is just one piece of our solar system and we encourage students to think of our global environment as precious now and in our future. We are challenging ourselves to rediscover the Earth’s beauty and the importance of the global environment.
